For Silver Run Electric, an LS Power Grid company, powering the community is about more than just transmission. We have partnered with Warriors Helping Warriors for the past two years, donating a total of $11,000 to help veterans adjust to civilian life after deployment.
When Retired Major Kevin Conley returned home injured from his deployment in Afghanistan, he and his family struggled to navigate the Veterans Administration (VA) and the military medical transition system.
Frustrated with the experience, Major Conley sought out other veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan and discovered they had similar difficulties dealing with the VA and getting support – not only for themselves, but also for veterans’ spouses, caregivers and children.
With the help of his parents, retired Lt. Col. Bill Conley and Marsha Conley, Major Conley formed Warriors Helping Warriors. Their mission is to educate, counsel, and house veterans and their families, helping them transition successfully back into society.
The Brian Conley Veterans Resiliency Center provides transitional housing, case management, and a wide range of support services. The organization estimates serving around 200 individuals annually through its various programs, and has housed over 170 homeless veterans since the center opened.
Emily Aquina, administrator for LS Power Grid’s Eastern Donation Committee, selected Warriors Helping Warriors because its mission resonated with her and the rest of the team. “As head of the Committee, I look to donate to grassroots organizations because of their direct and meaningful impact on the people they are serving,” said Aquina. “Warriors Helping Warriors definitely fell in that category which is why we plan to continue donating to them.”
“We have a number of veterans at LS Power, so this donation is especially meaningful for them,” Michael Ryan, Senior Substation Operator at Silver Run Electric, adds. “Warriors Helping Warriors is a lifeline for veterans in the community and we’re proud to support the work they do in Middletown and elsewhere to empower veterans and to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.”
