LS Power’s Doswell Energy Station Receives VA Volunteerism & Community Service Award / Supports Barton Rink Reopening

LS Power’s Doswell Generating Station in Hanover County is an active supporter of the local community through both its volunteer and community donation efforts. In 2021, Doswell contributed $108,000 in donations to local organizations. Among the contributions was a donation of $25,000 towards the renovation of The Matthew and Daniel Barton Memorial Rink, which held a Rededication Celebration on May 1, 2022.

“We are just so thrilled.  We are thankful for all of the support, from the community and from the Board, Doswell Energy and the Washington Capitals.  So many people said, ‘tell us what we can do to help.’  We are very lucky to have had such support from everyone.”

– Carol Barton

The Barton Hockey Rink was built 20 years ago in memory of Doug and Carol Barton’s late sons, who were avid hockey players and fans before losing their battles with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma and Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy at the ages of 10 and 19, respectively.  The Hanover community had put the rink to good use through various tournaments, middle school hockey and pick-up hockey. Unfortunately, the hockey rink was shut down in April 2021 after 20 years of activity as the Hanover County Parks and Recreation lacked funds for necessary upgrades and repairs.

Upon hearing of the Barton family’s GoFundMe campaign to rescue the rink, LS Power’s Doswell Generating Station was happy to contribute to the campaign. With a total of $144,000 raised for the rink, the needed repairs could proceed, along with the purchase of hockey equipment and training for the local public schools and Hanover Parks & Recreation department.

The Rededication Celebration took place on May 1 and was well attended, for which LS Power Asset Manager Jim Smith was part of the fun (minute 13 of this video)!

“In a community it takes a team…

to rehabilitate this rink was really a team effort
between family, friends, community, industry [Doswell
Energy Station], and the Washington Capitals”

–Jim Smith, LS Power Asset Manager

To date, Doswell has contributed more than $321,000 in donations and numerous volunteer hours to local communities and organizations, including these organizations:

  • ACES of Ashland (Emergency Services / Provision of Food & Clothing)
  • Downtown Ashland Association (Mid-Atlantic Railroad Park)
  • Hanover County Day Health Center and Raft House (Hunger Relief efforts)
  • Hanover Educational Foundation (STEM Scholarship & Educational Fund)

Doswell Generation Station Recognized for Community Efforts

In recognition of Doswell’s commitment to supporting the community and serving others, it received a 2021 Virginia Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award, part of an annual program that recognizes the outstanding contributions of individual volunteers and organizations across Virginia.  Doswell was recognized for a variety of efforts, including its longstanding volunteer assistance to the county’s Day Health Program and Raft House, where individuals with mental health challenges, substance abuse issues, and developmental disabilities get access to resources.

“The people who work at Doswell are truly committed to service, not only by providing the energy we need for daily living in a safe and environmentally conscience way, but also by volunteering and identifying organizations that could use our support.”

– Bryan Frady, Doswell Generating Station Plant Manager
